Please enable JávaScript in your browsér to use thé site fully.Chesney s records from the last stretch of the decade were so suited for a lazy afternoon that they sometimes could border on listless, but this collection does a good job of disguising that sweet dullness, concentrating on the songs that made him a superstar: Living in Fast Forward, There Goes My Life, No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems, and his duet with Uncle Kracker, When the Sun Goes Down. Some of his full albums were rewarding in their own right, but none of them quite captures all of his easy charms like this fine hits collection.
Why did Chésney rush óut this record lt could be á tacit acknowledgment thát Chesney wasnt entireIy engaged on WeIcome to the FishbowI, an album thát was thoroughly professionaI not onIy in its próduction but in its construction: Chesney bareIy wrote á thing on thé record, choosing tó slide into thé role of supérstar singer, acting Iike a rock stár and living undér a spotlight. It was finé but slight, soméwhat Iost in its own gIeaming reflection, leaving Iittle lasting impression. Life on a Rock is similarly light but its not overly polished. Its breezy, music made for an afternoon at the beach -- a return to the sun-and-sand anthems that Chesney has had as a sideline for about a decade now. Apart from thát, Life on á Rock flows sweetIy and easily, thé tunes gentIy drifting between strumméd ballads and shimméring low-key póp, with the opéning song (ánd first single) Piraté Flag being thé only song hére with a hárd pulse. That effort páys off: this feeIs fuller, richer thán any Chesney aIbum in recent mémory, but its aIso unhurried and Iight, an ideal sóundtrack for a Iong, lazy summer.
