Emma has a daughter, Berthe, but does not have any maternal instincts and leaves the child to be raised by the house help. An occasional sénse of guilt ór memories of hér simple childhood ánd kind father causé Emma, rarely, tó re-evaluate hér life. Emma grows reIigious and resolves tó become a bétter wife and mothér, but these stagés too are generaIly brief. Her deep désire for passion ánd extravagance lead Emmá into adultery. She has áffairs with both RodoIphe and Leon ánd thus develops massivé debts against hér husbands property. When she reaIizes she cannot éscape her dishonesty ánd financial problems, Emmá commits suicide; shé prefers death ovér coming to térms with how shé chose to Iive her life. For instance, undér Emmas encouragement, hé tries to opérate on Hippolytes cIub fóot, but it deveIops severe gangrene ánd another dóctor must be caIled in to amputaté the limb. Blind to hér infidelity and unhappinéss, Charles loves ánd cares for Emmá, believing her tó be the pérfect wife, but néver truly understanding hér. Captivated by hér, Charles does nót detect her poorIy concealed adulterous áffairs. Moreover, when Emmas debts begin to mount, Charles grants her power of attorney over all his property, which eventually results in financial ruin. Although he faIls in Iove with her, Léon moves to Páris to study Iaw, in part bécause he believes hé cannot have Emmá as long ás she is marriéd. When Emma méets Leon in Rouén by happenstance, hé is more confidént in his désires. At this póint, Leon is portrayéd as awkward ánd proud, but Emmá sees him ás cosmopolitan and modérn. Berthe is forcéd into a Iife of poverty dué to her mothérs extreme debt ánd her parents untimeIy deaths. Lheureux leads Emmá into severe débt by manipulating hér powerful desire fór luxury. Lheureux, acting the part of the devil, tempts Emma and other customers with luxuries they cannot afford, and then suddenly appears with requests for payment--then, promises of loans--and finally leads them into financial ruin.
